Our Experiences in Xela, Guatemala

Hello everyone! Our group has spent the last week here in Xela, Guatemala. We were all placed in homestays and have attended Spanish school Monday through Friday. It has really been an amazing trip so far. I love our group and our leaders more and more as we get to know eachother better. This week we have walked all around the markets of Xela and also visted the “fiesta” in the central park. There were many people out celebrating and admiring the colorful, grand carpets made from sawdust (will post pictures). We also took a salsa dancing class which was super fun and hilarious but I guess we got the hang of it… We are going dancing tonight to put our skills to the test. Some of of also learned how to make pupusas (which are so delicious). On Wednesday and/or Thursday, we also participated in the service project, helping local children with their homework. I LOVED this. The kids were so sweet, inviting, and gracious. I have really enjoyed my homestay family and I have Maggie as the best roomie ever, but I have seriously never eaten so many carbs in my life (roscas!). Dinners are like rice with a side of bread with a side of tortillas and more bread, nonetheless it has all been yummy. So to the parents at home, no need to worry, we are all well fed and safe. And our espanol is getting muy bien, as Jenny would say. We are all anticipating the trek to Lake Atitlan on Sunday, some of us are excited, some not so much, but it will be great to all be together again. I can’t wait to explore more of Central America but I also can’t believe we already coming to the end of week two. Wish us luck on out trek! XOXO
