Hangin’ in Jinja

Oliotia! A lot has happened since our scavenger hunt! We’ve left Entebbe and, after a three hour matatu ride, arrived in Jinja, an amazing town on the Nile. A small path leads from our guest house to the riverfront and, at night, the relaxing sound of water puts us to sleep. We’ve experienced a lot in the past three days! For starters:
We’ve had a picnic a beach of Lake Victoria.
We’ve gotten in touch with our inner hippies and played a game where we literally sat in a circle, held hands, and just smiled at one another.
We’ve wandered around the markets of Entebbe Town and Chitora and tasted our first, but certainly not our last, Rolexes, and we’ve laughed uncontrollably about Alvin’s first date. Colin sand and danced along to “I’m a Barbie Girl, (don’t worry, I’ve got it on video) and this morning us girls had our first experiences of hand washing clothes. Alvin and Savannah ventured out to a Hindu Temple early this morning while Kevin explored Jinja and made some new friends.

All in all, our time here in Uganda has been amazing, to say the least. Each of us had met and connected with at least one local Ugandan and had been touched by their stories. Our group has really bonded and is feeling more and more comfortable with each other with every passing day. We’ve learned a lot, thanks to our amazing leaders (brownie points, Avy and Colin?) and laughed even more. Every day is an exciting adventure and we’re all looking forward to seeing more of this beautiful continent and learning more about its amazing culture and people.

With orientation finally over, we can begin our volunteer work! Tomorrow we begin work at Soft Power Education!
