HERE WE GO!

Greetings, Nkulars!

We are getting (stupid) excited to meet each and every one of you fine ladies next week. Amidst all of our pre-trip-prep hullaballoo, we have still made time to laugh together, sip on delicious coffee, and relish in the uncertainties of the adventures ahead.

Just to help you get yo' head in the game / help you prepare for study abroad in East Africa, here's a few pieces of advice from our brains to yours (with love).

1. Read about the region.
We cannot stress this enough. In order to get the most out of your experience in East Africa, come with a baseline understanding of its recent history. Wikipedia is your friend. Have questions ready – think about what is unclear and come prepared to discuss!

2. Unpack a few things.
We know you tried to squeeeeze in a few extra t-shirts and pairs of pants, but you really don't need it. Do yourself (and your lower back) a favor by packing the lightest pack you possibly can.

3. Find your new friends.
Why wait to connect with each other in the airport? Find each other on different social media channels, and get excited together!!! #Wheeeee!!!

4. Get your ducks in a row.
Call your bank to let them know you'll be traveling out of country, request your Carpe Diem T-shirt, confirm you have the exact USD necessary for your in-country visas, double check your vaccinations and prescription meds, the list goes on and on. Make a master to-do list and check it off as you go.

5. Start writing in your journal now.
Your journey has really already begun – savor these early days. What are your fears, anxieties, hopes, intentions? Look outside your bedroom window and muse how that view is going to change in the coming months.

6. Think about your overarching goals.
Don't just think about the fuzzy stuff, like "get better at life" or "suck less," but also verbalize some concrete goals. Be it related to your lifestyle, diet, attitude, all of the above. Identify something tangible you can start working towards.

7. Indulge.
Go out and buy your favorite dessert and revel in it. Eat it slowly. Really slowly. Take the time to enjoy all of the small things you'll say good bye to for now. But fear not! You'll be back soon enough.

Most importantly, don't stress. Not to sound too High School Musical, but we're all in this together!

See you in 7 days, Rafikis!
