On November 25, Walkabout celebrated Thanksgiving. It started out with some intense debate; we quickly found out that everyone’s Thanksgiving traditions are wildly different. Some people have the classic turkey, some make lamb or tofu. Some people need gravy or there’s no point in celebrating, others feel the same about rice. Some of us start our “dinner” at 2PM, some people eat as late as 7PM. Of all things, all fourteen of us agreed on string beans. We discussed and compromised on a delicious menu that everyone would enjoy. Syd, Morgan, and I went grocery shopping at Wooly’s, getting an insane amount of food. Of all the meals we’ve done this semester, this one was the most collaborative. Everyone was cooking something, and it all miraculously came together around 5:30PM. It was wonderful to see everyone in the kitchen, making classic American Thanksgiving food. The familiarity was really heart-warming, making the meal feel like home. We invited some of the Castaway’s workers to join us, in the spirit of coming together. During dinner, we all went around and said what we are thankful for. Everyone had their personal touch, but across the board Walkabout is thankful for this experience, the people we shared our meal with, and our families back home.

Happy Thanksgiving,
Rebecca
