Peguche

We arrived in the small town of Peguche on Monday after a full day of travel from the Amazon. The group was greeted by Lorena whom we met in Banos and introduced to our homestay families and homes for the week.
On Tuesday morning, we had an artesan workshop in which we learned about the intricate process of making “bufundas” or scarves. From dyeing the wool with natural pigments from plants and fruits, to spinning the wool, to finally using the loom to weave the finished product, we were taught how to do the whole procedure. We enjoyed the experience and now know how much time and effort it takes the artesans to make their attire.
After the workshop, we resumed Spanish classes in the afternoon after having a week off from the language. The group was definitely ready to get back to learning Spanish as it helps us to converse with our homestay families and other locals more easily.
On Wednesday, we had Spanish classes again from 9-1 and a music workshop in the afternoon in which the group was taught to make panflutes, listened to a Quichea band play music that they wrote, and danced to a couple of their songs. Jaime, the leader of the band, pulled out what Willy deemed the “rage mask” and told us to dance freestyle in the middle of the circle. So everyone pulled out their signature moves and had a great time doing it. All in all, it was a great experience and we loved the Quichea music.
Thursday marked the group’s one-month anniversary together. It’s pretty crazy to think we’ve been in South America for that long already and are now a third of the way through our trip. Time seems to be flying by as we try to soak up everything we can about Ecuador and South America. Can’t wait to enjoy the next two months with the group and spend the next half in Peru. Stay tuned for Sam’s update on the rest of the week!
