Chiang Mai

It's been two days in this bustling city. The mosquitoes are biting, the birds are chirping, the blenders are blending smoothies. It's a good time. We've been spending a lot of time talking and living with the locals. Some of the more outgoing members of our group have been known to get caught up in interesting conversations with complete strangers. It's surprising how much a bitter old man can teach you about this place. Our guides have given us a lot of freedom to explore the area by ourselves. I've gotten lost in the city more than once but each time I manage to find a new gem, and my way back. Our group dynamic has been really great so far. Everyone seems really aware that we are here for a reason. I feel like I'm really in my element here- something I'm not used to. It doesn't matter how much the locals laugh at me while I trip over my Thai or while I photograph (but don't eat) a whole fried fish on a stick. I can't go as far as to say that I fit in- but I would say I'm accepted. At least for trying. The hardest part about being here is knowing we can't stay. In a few days we start living with our homestay families. I think the group is excited for it but obviously very nervous. With the huge culture barrier, it might be difficult to connect. But, next week's blogger will update you on that!
Peace!
