Rafting!

From Aiden Blood

Greetings from the town of Kabale. I am going to tell you about my experiences in Jinja and Kampala.

We stayed at the Nalubale River Rafting Camp ventured into Jinja for the afternoon. While walking on the street someone offered me a piece of his chicken; I didn’t want to be rude and turn it down so I ate it. After thanking him, I went back to ask where he got it and how much it costs. I was astonished by the generosity that this man on the street offered me, a white foreigner, more food off of his plate. Someone of that socioeconomic level back home never would have offered their food to a stranger. It was an example of how friendly Ugandans are. After the fact, I realized the possibility that I wasn’t sure where his hands had been since the last time he washed them…

The next day we went rafting with the Nalubale Rafting company and had a healthy dose of 8 rapids over the course of the day. All morning we had beautiful blue skies, but minutes after finishing lunch the clouds swallowed up the blue and started to pour. Once we began to paddle again, we witnessed a misty water tornado ascend from the river ahead of us. We joined the Ugandan guides with a sharp rolling of the tongue out of excitement for the freakish phenomenon. After the last rapid of the day, my boat crew and I decided to abandon our raft and bob through the tumultuous waves. Back at the hostel, a few of us decided to trek through lots of mud to rope swing into the Nile and got mud all over our bodies, clothes, towels, and a camera.
