Traveling with benefits

Living on the other side of the world… An idea I would never have seen coming a year ago as I put an end to my tenure in high school. To live day in and day out in a different part of the world generates so many positive experiences with so many different incredible people. The worst part of my days are when the majestic wild dolphins living in Koombana Bay don’t take the time to visit the Dolphin Discovery Center, the place I have dedicated my time this FVP semester to.

Life in Bunbury, West Australia has been life changing in only the few months I have spent here. Living on my own (and with my carpe buddy Erin) in Bunbury has expanded the horizons I had thought already so broad. Every person I meet has a unique experience on life from different cultures all around the world. With new friends made from all over the world, it’s hard to focus on whats next for me in life. With so many positive people in my life, I have been given a unique opportunity to learn from these people. I find it funny, I spend all my time hanging around people from different parts of Europe and Asia, yet rarely find myself in the presence of real Aussies. My second day, I found myself at the beach surrounded by Italians, Germans, French, English and Japanese people. All different backgrounds and cultures together on the beach, soaking up the sun and watching the waves crash over the sand. At this moment I knew that I belonged here. Everyday I see friends as I walk through town, at the grocery store, at the beach and at work. To me this is a blessing I can’t disregard.

Reflecting on past experiences, the friendships I have built with strangers from all over the world are what make the days memorable. Spending time with the beautiful people I know and love is how I want to spend everyday of my life. Traveling has opened my eyes to so many different ways of life, none of which could be realized without my friends. To have the opportunity to do what I am doing is one that I shall be forever thankful.

To think I came across the world to be with the dolphins…
