Update from QUETZAL

We all survived the second and last week at Bona Fide Farm! Some of us were a little worn out in the beginning of the week, but a couple surprises from Mitch, AKA Earth Mother, made an awesome week. To start the week, Kaitlin, Zach, Byron, Graham, and I went to Santa Cruz beach. A storm approached as we arrived, but that did not stop any of us from swimming or playing frisbee in the pouring rain. The beach day ended at the group´s go to restaraunt, Campestre, in the nearby town where everyone met to enjoy a delicious meal. The next day was the first surprise of the week with no work! Instead, the group cramped in a tiny bus on top of eachother and went to the islands biggest festival of the year! Unfortunately, there was not any bull riding, but a lot of excitement in the street. Large crowds were bobbing plants up and down in the air with a super loud instrumentals in the background. It was seen as a religious event in our eyes and not too much of a ¨festival¨. The day off was nice, but it was time to get back to work on Tuesday. Some of the most rewarding and eventful work this week was harvesting rice with Roxan, a super fun woman that works on the farm. She lead the way cutting the rice down with her machete. It is hard work in the blistering heat, but Roxan kept us going with her song and dance. The two jobs we had were cutting the rice with machetes and carrying piles over into one gargantuan one. In that same day, each and everyone of us had the oppurtunity to take a basket weaving class in what looked like a backyard farm. The man in charge was around 78 years old that did not look a year older than 60. All of our baskets turned out different and super cool ranging from a tiny easter basket to a giant fruit bowl. After a long days work, our nights consisted of relaxing and hanging out in the main kitchen area or by the brick oven. Song and dance were a consistent nightly routine this week to conclude an amazing day. Not only the Carpe group would partake in all the fun, but the rest of the visitors on the farm. Towards the end of the week, Mitch was giving us surprise after surprise.. We made chocolate with the cacao that is grown right on the island. Half of the Carpe group made a peppermint chocolate while the other made peanutbutter chocolate, both of which satisfied our sweet tooth. The next day was another food surprise! (The groups favorite type). We made the tastiest homemade pizzas in the huge brick oven. Mitch was very strict on what needed to happen to make it a successful pizza night and we nailed it. Some of us were either making the dough, running it to Mitch, making the sauce, or putting together a pizza for Mitch to cook! It ended up being a huge success. Vince, a very knowledgable worker of the farm AKA Uncle, made us a cake for desert that put our satisfaction over the top. There was tons of excitement in one week, but then it was time to leave.. It was a bittersweet depart with Mitch telling Ashley and Kevin how awesome of a time he had with us and how he wants to have any of us back. Now it is time for Project WOO, get our surf on, and get closer to scuba diving in Roatan!
